Wink Restaurant & Wine Bar

Luke Duncan and I decided to celebrate our official 4 months with dinner and drinks! He surprised me by taking me to Wink, it’s so quaint and romantic. For the starters, I got the golden & bull’s blood beets with chevre, walnuts, fiji apple, and apple cider vinaigrette. Ugh, you can never go wrong with beets and man, was this divine! Luke got chilled elephant garlic soup with brioche croutons and arugula pesto. Super garlicky and perfect to dip with their toasty ciabatta bread! For the main course, I ordered the sautéed tilefish with yukon potatoes, king trumpets, arugula, capers, and bacon remoulade. Tilefish is a perfect meaty flaky fish that holds well with these flavors. And for the meat man, he ordered the NY strip with celeriac, rattlesnake beans, shittakes, and hollandaise. The final end to the meal was the Wink trio sample dessert! Man oh man does someone know how to feed me (and get me drunk)! 

Bouldin Creek Cafe
They serves tasty vegetarian food that is flavorful and satisfying. The place is incredibly nice, laid back and healthy! For pickins is a hummus and pesto plate, a homemade traditional hummus and a chipotle-pecan pesto served with crispy wheat tortilla points.

Izzoz Tacos
Not busy at work means getting creative in the kitchen. Izzoz Tacos (now Mellizoz Tacos) does not serve some type of salad so we decided to make an arugula and spinach salad with the bowman chicken topped with slaw, carrots, pico de gallo, avocado and the cilantro lime sauce!

Perla’s

A surprise visit from my dad! I received a phone call right after working out and he tells me “Meet me at a place called Perla’s on Gilson and South Congress”. I reply, “OKAY!”. I get there and of course, my father has already started on the cornmeal fried gulf oysters with chili morita. After this, he decided to go big and order two more appetizers: grilled octopus, papas bravas with capers, parsley, and saffron aioli & salt and jalapeno pepper fried calamari with green sauce and marinara. Finger lickin’ good. Oh wait, I’m not done yet. For the entree, I ate the pan roasted atlantic halibut paired with a watermelon radish and beansprouts sprouts salad. This was a perfect dish. For the dad, he ordered the crispy Texas gulf red snapper with lemon spinach and spicy sofrito. I sampled a bit of his dish, and I liked mine way better! However, Perla’s is mouth watering good. I’m a huge seafood lover and this place nails it. I had been dying to try this place for the longest time ever and finally had an opportunity today. It was a beautiful day in Austin and we were seated outside underneath one of the oak trees. It was pretty much the perfect spot (minus the flies) but with the misty fans, it was completely tasteful.

Rounders Pizzera

Now I’m not gonna lie…I ordered a spinach salad when I went here. But I did have some pizza. To me, Rounders Pizzera still doesn’t beat Homeslice.  Homeslice has a special place in my heart. However, Rounders does serve free garlic knots and pizza comes out pipping hot. When Homeslice’s wait is way too long, I’ll hit Rounders!  

Homemade Canelé
There is a French guy. The other dude is American. The American makes the French pastries taste so heavenly. I arrived to work and there laid right next to my desk a plate of something that looked delicious. Little did I know they are called canelé. I savored every bite of this petite pastry. A canelé is a small French pastry with a soft and tender custard center and a dark, thick caramelized crust. It is made from egg, sugar, milk, and flour flavored with rum and vanilla, the custard batter is baked in a mold, giving the canelé a caramelized crust and custard-like inside. The French guy tell us the more burnt and covered they are with “caramel”, the better!

Who doesn’t love little fluffy pillows of fried goodness!? Made to order, these pipping hot beignets are lightly coated with powered sugar….ooooo la la! Chez Beignets is located in Chinatown of Houston and is the perfect place to drink chickory coffee. The coffee is rich and reminds me as if I am in the French Quarters in New Orleans. The cutest part of this place is that the owners are a cute eldery French couple!
